Passion and Perseverance; The Rise of Tenzin Tseten Bhutia in Fashion

Tenzin Tseten Bhutia, a prominent figure in Nepal's nascent high fashion industry, embarked on his fashion journey after an unconventional start. Born and raised in Sikkim, Bhutia initially pursued a commerce degree in Delhi but was inspired to switch to fashion after seeing designers on the cover of India Today. Despite initial skepticism from his mother, he secured a spot at the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Bangalore.

Post-graduation, Bhutia honed his skills at his friend’s uncle factory, Himalayan Couture, and later evolved into a full-fledged designer with the support of his mom and his family. His career transformation from commerce to fashion underscores his dedication and highlights the potential for success in unconventional career paths.

1. What were some of the initial struggles you encountered when you first entered the fashion industry?

One of the main challenges I faced was the lack of prominent fashion designers to look up to, which meant I had to carve my own path and create opportunities from scratch. Additionally, a significant part of my journey involved educating people about fashion, which was one of my primary goals.

2. What do you think sets your work apart from others, leading to such recognition?

My approach is driven by passion and creativity. Designing from the heart and prioritizing creativity over commercial considerations have distinguished my work from others.

3. How do you balance staying true to your unique style while also adapting to market trends?

I strive to maintain a balance between traditional and western designs, often blending the two to provide a diverse range for my clients. This approach allows me to stay true to my style while also being responsive to market trends.

4. What advice would you give to aspiring designers about handling the ups and downs of the fashion industry?

My advice is to never lose heart or passion for your work, even when things aren't going as planned. There were times when I relied on my family for financial support, but perseverance and dedication to your passion will ultimately be rewarded with love and support.

5. How do you see the future of fashion evolving, and what role do you hope to play in it?

I am committed to contributing to the growth of Nepal's fashion industry and hope to see it achieve global recognition. I believe the industry has great potential to make a significant impact on the world stage, and I look forward to being a part of that journey.

6. Can you share the experience of your most recent project and your upcoming plans?

My latest project was for a music video, which was an incredible experience despite the demanding schedule. Looking ahead, I have several exciting projects and appearances planned, both in Kathmandu and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on my work!

7. What message do you have for young designers who look up to you as an inspiration?

Never give up on your dreams. If you are passionate about fashion design, keep working hard and stay committed. There will come a day when your efforts will be rewarded. Believe in your dreams and in your destiny.
