- Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the field of fashion photography?
I’m Pawan Joshi, a photographer. Over the past decade, I’ve dedicated myself to capturing moments and telling stories through the lens. My journey in photography began 10 years ago, driven by a passion for visual art and a desire to explore the world from different perspectives.
I didn’t initially aim to become a photographer; I just wanted a camera. After finishing my +2, I joined a photography workshop to fill some free time. My mentor was excellent, which sparked my interest in the field. This led to my first collaborative exhibition, “A Moment,” which was well-received and solidified my passion for photography.
- As a photographer who pursued a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, how has the educational background influenced and enhanced your photography?
My bachelor’s in Fine Arts played a significant role in shaping my approach to photography. The program deepened my understanding of composition, color theory, and visual storytelling elements that are crucial in photography. It also gave me a boarder perspective on arts as a whole, allowing me to experiment and infuse different artistic techniques into my work. The theoretical knowledge and practical skills I gained through my fine arts studies have definitely enhanced the way I see and capture the world through my lens.
- Having been in Photography for 10 years, what changes have you observed in the industry, especially considering the impact of coronavirus pandemic?
Over the past 10 years, I’ve seen significant changes in Photography. The pandemic forced a shift to virtual and more intimate projects, emphasizing the importance of digital presence. I’ve a noticed a decline in interest in fashion shows, with people becoming less engaged. The rise of smartphones with better cameras has also reduced the demand for professional photography. Moreover, it’s disheartening to see that those who should be valued in the industry are often overshadowed by individuals who gain quick fame through social media platforms.
- Where do you see yourself in the next three years, both in your photography career and your other business ventures?
In three years, I see myself focusing on growing PJ Studio. While I started as a photographer, my focus has now shifted towards managing photography as a business. I have a dedicated team that supports me, and we’re expanding our services. My goal is to strengthen PJ Studio’s presence and make it a leading name in the industry.
- What advice would you give to aspiring fashion photographers who are just starting out?
My advice is to focus on mastering the basics and developing your unique style. Collaborate with others to built your portfolio and network within the industry. Be patient, stay dedicated, and keep learning. Success takes time, but passion and persistence will take you far.
