Q: Can you share your journey into the fashion industry and how you came to excel as a designer, stylist, and entrepreneur?
The essence of fashion isn't just about looking impeccable; it begins with the depth of simple colors and the power of vision and imagination. For me, fashion exists everywhere. My journey into the fashion industry started with a piece of advice I often received from my elders: "Do what you love and love what you do." I loved designing because it’s a form of self-expression and a captivating part of culture. My passion for sketching and my deep admiration for the arts, inspired by my mother, set me on this path.
The real question was what type of designing I should pursue. Fashion design is more than just clothing—it includes jewelry, shoes, accessories, etc. However, I found that I was most creative and fulfilled when designing clothing. It allowed me to bring new apparel ideas to life, making fashion design my pursuit of happiness and a means of self-expression.
Q: How did you start your own fashion label, and what were the initial focuses of your collections?
I started designing in 2010 and launched my label, 'MiMz,' in 2012 in partnership with House of Fashion. Initially, I focused on cocktail dresses, party wear, gowns, and casual dresses. My debut collection, themed 'Red Carpet,' was showcased at Fashion Gala 2012, marking the beginning of numerous shows. After a year, I ventured into men's collections and found my creativity further ignited.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs, and how do you stay innovative?
Inspiration comes from various sources. Designers like Oscar De La Renta, Christian Dior, Valentino Garavani, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Ellie Saab, and Balmain have greatly influenced me. Additionally, anything that intrigues me becomes a source of inspiration, whether it's fine arts, the diverse contours of nature, or ethnic prints and fabrics. My goal is to help develop and expand Nepal's fashion industry and hopefully take it to international heights.
Q: What role do sustainability and ethical practices play in your work, and how do you incorporate them?
Sustainability and ethical practices are crucial in my work. The global fashion industry has a significant impact on the environment, making sustainable fashion more important than ever. As designers, we should choose eco-friendly, organic, and renewable fabrics like cotton, jute, wool, bamboo, and soy silk while avoiding harmful materials like polyester, nylon, and synthetics. Creating high-quality, timeless designs is essential for promoting sustainable fashion.
Q: What skills do you consider essential for success in the fashion industry?
Success in the fashion industry requires a diverse skill set, including: Artistic skills, Business analysis skills, Networking and communication skills, Craftsmanship, Grit and humility, Originality, Organizational and time management skills, Team player, Hard-working and passionate, Detail-oriented, Fabric knowledge, Market and trend awareness, Problem-solving skills, Competitive spirit, etc.
Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?
One of the most rewarding moments of my career happened recently on May 26th, 2024, when I showcased my new collection, "Maya/Mamta," with my son at FNN. As a designer, I had always dreamed of walking the ramp with my child, and this dream came true. It was a special and unforgettable experience to shine together with my heartbeat.
